Font interglyph spacing and Quality

I know, 0.4.1.x may be out of scope for you guys, but i have to use it
because if Produktion releases.
Is there a way to change the spacing between Glyph´s? I have a
font "Impact", where glyphs are displayed very close in my sheets, closer
than with the same font in photoshop for instance. So with lower screen resolutions, the text is more and more unreadable.
Is there another way to keep the quality of the font rendering roghly
the same in all screen resolutions. I defined the impact font with native
res. of 1024/768 and it looks good in 1024/768 but much more less good
in 800/600. I know, that FREETYPE is not rendering in full quality because
of legal issues, but is there a way to let the font created at runtime with
the screen res. choosed and having the best out of it in that res?
